How can you love yourself if you lack self-esteem or self-worth? Being involved in a relationship puts you in an influential position. If you are in a relationship with someone who has low self-esteem, there are some steps you can take to build it up. Your words and actions toward that person can build that persons self-esteem and improve your entire relationship.
Stop what you are doing when spoken to by your partner. Look your partner directly in the eyes during conversation. This shows respect, indicates that you care and demonstrates interest. Consistently behaving this way will build your partners self-esteem. Eventually, your partner may reciprocate your behavior, which will build up your own self-esteem as well. When we treat others the way we want to be treated, it can be contagious.
Ask for your partners advice when making decisions. This shows that you value your partner's opinion and advice. You are also acknowledging that person's intelligence. Again, respectful behavior can be contagious. Dont be surprised if your partner starts asking for your advice.
Buy or make little personal gifts occasionally. The gifts do not need to be expensive, just something that shows you care and that you know what your partner likes. Purchase things like a favorite candy bar, a flower or a card. It shouldn't take long before you start receiving special gifts occasionally.
Plan a date. Make reservations at a favorite restaurant. Ask about taking in a movie, a game of golf or a walk on the beach. You know what your partner likes to do, so show your interest.
Remember special days like birthdays, anniversaries and holidays with cards, simple gifts, loving words and your time. Nothing shows respect more than giving of your time.
Say "I love you" or "I care about you" often.
