How to Build Self-Esteem in Boys

How to Build Self-Esteem in Boys
Self-esteem is defined as the way we feel about ourselves, and for the most part, it is developed in childhood. Having good self-esteem can lead to a more positive self image and greater success in life. Boys in particular need to have their self esteem nurtured, because those with low self esteem are more likely to abuse drugs, become bullies, or be depressed. Building self-esteem in boys will help them deal with life's challenges in a healthy way.

Words of Praise

Words can have a strong impact. Finding ways to compliment boys and praise their good behavior and hard work can build their self-esteem. A boy who is constantly praised by his parents and given verbal encouragement is more likely to feel better about himself. It is important to focus on the effort that the child put into something, rather than the results.
On the other hand, negative comments can erode boys' self esteem. Avoid ridiculing and putting down their efforts.

Teach him how to be independent. For example, allowing him to take on odd jobs around the neighborhood, such as mowing lawns or shoveling snow gives him a sense of responsibility and the confidence that he can do things for himself. Letting him choose activities and chores that he can accomplish on his own also teaches him about making his own decisions, while at the same time fostering a sense of independence and a can-do attitude.

Let him express himself. Society tends to look down on boys who show their emotions and vulnerabilities. Many people think that boys who do are wimps. Like girls, boys need comfort and support when they are scared or sad, but often don't ask for it for fear of rejection or ridicule. Let him know that it is okay to express his emotions, and provide a safe and nurturing environment where they can freely express themselves, without fear of ridicule and censure.

Let him be himself. If your son has no interest in traditionally masculine activities such as sports, don't force him to participate in them, and don't make him feel inadequate because of it. Instead, encourage him to pursue those activities that he does like, and provide opportunities to participate in them. For example, if he has an interest in cooking, allow him to help in the kitchen, or enroll him in a cooking class for children. By being open to alternative interests and activities, and accepting his choices, you build his confidence and let him know that it is OK to try new things.

Be a good role model. Your own feelings of self worth and confidence also play a role in building self-esteem in boys. Boys need someone they can look up to in a positive way. Fathers especially need to get involved, because boys whose fathers show an interest in their son's lives are more likely to become happy and self sufficient adults.
